What To Give Someone At The Reception

Smith Goes to Washington (Mr. Smith Goes To Washington) 1939

"Capra."

I can not think of a more sharply define this masterpiece of Frank Capra teacher, despite the redundancy. Film principles and values, Capra film in its own right.
Washington
A senator suddenly dies. We must immediately find a substitute, a substitute that does not ask questions, to vote and do what you say, a puppet at the end of the day. The choice is Jefferson Smith (James Stewart ), a naive young man who leads a group of explorers.

The young Smith arrives in Washington as a senator and proposed a law that calls for the creation of a national boys camp. But the terrain in which it proposes to lift the camp is the same politicians who have chosen to support their personal gain.

Capra film takes us through the Stewart's hand to show through the eyes of this faith in the political system first and then disappointment. It may seem overly patriotic film, but I think all those images of flags and statues of Lincoln are necessary to understand the message of the film, far from being a defense of the virtues U.S. government system is a critical acid to it, and corruption is woven into their networks. So critical that many thought should not be premiering on the brink of war.

just have to see the original trailer to see how it evades the main theme of the movie. Nothing to see.

Jane Arthur in the role of secretary of Senator Smith is the thinking brain of the tandem. The experience is a plus and his policy is crucial for the development of events.
Arthur is almost half of the movie. Done a magnificent job. Had not seen much of it actress and I think you have to do something about it.

Jefferson Smith is accused of wanting to keep donations from children to the camp, a victim of the forgery of his signature on documents never seen. But what can you do when even the newspapers are bought by a tyrant, the party leader, Jim Taylor? (Edward Arnold ). Crucial scene in which Taylor's men literally run over with his truck to a cart of children trying to spread the small local newspaper and Smith that tells the whole truth.

Thanks to a technique of parliamentary filibuster, filibustering, whereby it is intended to block a law or a legislative act by a long speech, Smith manages to be heard. The Congressman has the word as it does not feel or not to stop his speech.

Jimmy Stewart performs one of the best performances I've ever seen. The film owes much to Stewart, without diminishing Capra or other actors and actresses. Because there is a very thin line between funny and ridiculous (like the patriotic speeches) and Jimmy does not just funny but also poignant, or between a long scene and a scene heavy and overloaded, and Jimmy gets a long scene, interesting, dramatic and fun time. Stewart's work is sublime, of those who are able to do a select few.

also deserves special mention Claude Rains in the role of Senator Joseph Paine, a man who believes in the American system but eventually seduced by a corrupt system. Is between a rock and a hard place, the party leader, Taylor, who represents the authority and power and it seems that reminds him when he was still young and idealistic Jefferson Smith. In the background you can see, but has much at stake.

If you have not been to that you are not waiting. And a tip, better seen in original version with subtitles. The Jimmy Stewart dubbing is really bad.

And since we did the vote on who was your favorite actor Jimmy Stewart won first prize and the chance it deserves, I leave you with this video of 21 Classic Movies on the actor. It only lasts five minutes and worth it. Have a nice weekend. A greeting.
